Heroine Addiction
Marissa Paternoster of Screaming Females has a solo project called Noun. The debut album, Holy Hell, is coming out in June. It's not an acoustic version of Screaming Females. Though Screaming Females bassist King Mike and drummer Jarrett Dougherty (among other friends) contributed to the recordings, Paternoster wrote all of the songs outside of her band. It isn't really even an acoustic album, but you do get to hear her pulling way back and finding possibilities and subtleties in her voice and guitar work that the full power trio necessarily blows past like a passenger jet over Indiana.
There's even some piano and a Patsy Cline cover, assuming that what's on the Myspace will be on the album. The Myspace has hooky ballads like "Snakes" that give me a touch of elation I haven't gotten from a Screaming Females song except maybe "Bell". Come to think of it, I'm getting damn excited about this.
New Yorkers can see it live first with a bunch of other fine Don Giovanni bands at Mercury Lounge, April 25th.
Also, finding out about the project led to me to Ms. Paternoster's blog, Forgotten Grin, which is full of her art, like Lucky Jim above, and other rad items.
