Pierced Arrows has officially signed to Vice with a February 2, 2010 release date for their sophomore album Descending Shadows. Singer, guitar player Fred Cole has said that the album title refers to the way they are "descending on the earth with a new band", while trying to escape the shadow of their beloved former band Dead Moon. The signing means that now, after decades on the road, Fred and his wife Toody, who have formed the nucleus of several bands together, might finally become as well-known and appreciated as anyone who makes crazy-ass garage rock can ever hope to be. Because of the unstinting emotional intensity that animates the Coles' music, they are more or less incomparable, but it's their story, as told in the Dead Moon documentary Unknown Passage, that gets a lot of fans hooked.
Their style is famously unvarnished and palpably American, which is why people in Europe love them, and Descending Shadows is no different. One of the songs on it has just got to be destined for the best Levi's commercial ever in the very near future.
This news tidbit also gives me an excuse to plug a feature I did on Toody Cole and to post the album art and this Grade-A press photo. Now that is one fine looking band.
