Cultural Quarantine

So, California's Supreme Court ratifies Proposition 8 but apologizes/softens the blow by saying it isn't effective retroactively and that it doesn't deny anyone the right to a same-sex civil union. THIS article in the New York Times lists several reasons why that actually really sucks but I thought of another one. It makes it harder to argue for the repeal of Proposition 8 with practical arguments about legal rights because the court says all the law withholds is the title, the word marriage. Which reduces this discussion, for the time being, to its most difficult aspects. Either you are for an inclusive society that accepts gayness without qualms, or you have a problem with that. Perhaps it's good. Perhaps it will force that discussion even further out into the open.

I know it's a long way off from May, but I'd like to see the fight for gay marriage identified with Valentine's Day. Just imagine the parade. Valentine's Day is actually all about the right to marriage as a specifically sacred thing. After all, St. Valentine became known as the patron saint of love and lovers during the Roman Empire when soldiers were forbidden to marry. He continued to perform ceremonies in defiance of the law. I think he was martyred for it. So the story goes. And that's why we get to put pink and red together and eat chocolate in February.

Wait, V-Day already co-opted Valentine's Day to fight violence against women. Maybe they'll share the day, at least until everyone can really marry the consenting adult of their dreams.

Mermaid Nurse

I started thinking about mermaid nurses and decided that I had come up with a totally original idea and that maybe I should base a comic book around the adventures of a mermaid nurse or something. (You don't want to see my drawing.) Then, just to be sure, I Googled it and found a pic of a mermaid nurse tattoo, an enamel pin of Ariel the Little Mermaid in a really weird nurse costume and this lady, who I believe is called Nurse Nettle. I still may be a mermaid nurse for Halloween this year. In my mind it walks that sexy/goofy line in just the right way. Sort of like my stigmata costume last year.

You can check Nurse Nettle out in her natural habitat HERE .

Southeast Meets Southwest

This is my recipe for South East Asian-American Migas. I made it up today. Take four eggs and add some soy milk and some Sriracha and some cheddar cheese. Make sure there is enough soy milk to get some Calbee-brand Shrimp Flavored Chips slightly soggy.
Add some Calbee-brand Shrimp Flavored Chips. Scramble that shit.

This is so good. Ordinary migas are made with milk, regular hot sauce and tortillas chips but I think my way is better.

My trip to Florida

Yup. My grandfather turned 80 and this is the only photo I took.

Cheetos Baseball

Cheetos baseball is only possible, so far as I know, with giant Cheetos. They are round-ish, cylindrical, really, and very hard and dense. They are actually edible too; at least in comparison to regular Cheetos.
I was at a party recently where I started pitching them to a young woman with a baseball bat. It was quickly discovered that this was fun. You can throw them and you can hit them. Try it.
Someone recently observed that it's sort of striking/maybe a little disturbing that this food is so structurally sound you can hit it with a bat several times. I didn't think about this at the time.

Fuck. It's May.

And it's cloudy, so I'm blogging. Speaking of cloudy, Trader Joe's Bavarian Hefeweizen is pretty good. It's May's beer of the month even. It has a distinctly stiff flavor and is less cloying than I find your average hefeweizen. I feel motivated to try other Trader Joe's beers. But where do they come from?

This is the full extent of Trader Joe's statement on the subject:
In addition to wines, we’re known for our eclectic selection of beers. Craft brews/microbrews and imports are what we’re known for - you won’t find the “big brands” at Trader Joe’s. You will find interesting, craft beers in a variety of styles from around the country and around the world at great prices, every day.
